Although it is among the world’s longest running models and an American icon, the Corvette was nearly canceled after its third model year (1955) due to weak sales. In the marketplace, the car performed poorly at first for a number of reasons, which were gradually resolved in the second half of the 1950s to transform the car from a boondoggle into a genuinely compelling proposition. The rest, as they say, is history, and the Corvette has become as American as apple pie.

The Corvette began as a concept car shown at Motorama, a traveling auto show that showcased General Motors’ vision for the future. It was at these events that the jet age in car styling began: Motorama introduced the public to tail fins, jet exhausts, rocket motifs, and fighter plane inspiration in car design. 

The Corvette was first shown as a 1953 Motorama concept and caused a sensation. The concept also broke new ground. There had been no true American sports car since the brass era (the Mercer Raceabout of 1910 and the Stutz Bearcat of 1914) and so the concept was essentially foreign to American consumers. Thus, the inspiration for the Corvette could not come from America and would need instead to come from the other side of the Atlantic.

The idea of an American sports car came from Harley Earl, GM’s first head of styling. His children loved sports cars and so he drew up a sketch, which he handed to Bob McLean, a recent CalTech graduate who would later become Vice President of GM’s Design Staff. He came from Southern California so he understood the sports car scene better than most GM employees. The car was drawn up in secret more than a mile from GM’s main styling studios and the car was styled for production viability. It was about a foot lower than a conventional GM passenger car.

Given the car’s small scale of production and accelerated development schedule, its body was made of fiberglass rather than steel. The bodies were outsourced to MFG Corporation, the most experienced fiberglass manufacturer at the time. They were given just seven months to tool and produce first bodies.

To reduce technical risk and cost, the Corvette used conventional components from existing Chevrolet models, modified as necessary to fit the Corvette’s sports car packaging. The position of the steering column position meant that the column shift mechanism would interfere with the engine, so they made the car available exclusively with a two-speed automatic transmission. The chassis was a modified passenger car, albeit with substantial reinforcements because the Corvette’s fiberglass body did not carry any loads, unlike the usual metal bodies. Suspension and brakes were carried over from passenger cars, including spring rates. The car was powered by a hot-rodded version of the standard inline-6, fitted with triple carburetors, dual exhaust, more sporting camshaft, and higher compression ratio, which raised power from 106hp to 150hp. No V8 was available.

The resulting car was not tested as a sports car, and didn’t really perform as one either. There were also quality problems with the fiberglass bodies. The panel fit was poor and the finish showed visible imperfections even when new. In 1953, the Corvette’s first model year, the car was available exclusively in white as this color showed the fewest imperfections. The car was also expensive for a Chevrolet, which was a budget brand in the eyes of consumers. The Corvette cost twice as much as a standard Chevrolet passenger car and so the company found itself in a situation where Chevrolet buyers could not afford the Corvette and Corvette buyers were not typically setting foot in Chevrolet dealerships. The combination of the automatic-only configuration and basic side curtains instead of real side windows showed a fundamental misunderstanding of the market, and 1953 Corvette production amounted to just 300 cars.

Road and Track magazine pointedly observed, “the amazing thing about the Corvette is that it comes so close to being a really interesting, worthwhile and genuine sports car—yet misses the mark almost entirely.”

Sales were predictably slow, but a V8 finally arrived for 1955 (265 cid with optional 3-speed manual at the very end), but GM wouldn’t authorize production of the new car until unsold 1954 Corvettes had found owners, so only 700 1955 Corvettes were made, of which all but six of which were V8s. Matters were not helped by the fact that the 1955 cars looked basically the same as the 6-cylinder 1953 and 1954 Corvettes. As a result the car was to be canceled at the end of 1955 model year. Until Ford’s Thunderbird came out. It much more closely matched American consumers’ preferences and sold over 16,000 units in its first model year, 1955.

In light of Ford’s success, Chevrolet redoubled their commitment to the Corvette and the resulting 1956 Corvette represented a dramatic improvement, with revised styling, improved suspension, improved quality, standard V8 power, conventional windows, a better convertible top, and the now iconic side cove styling. 1957 saw exciting new options including a 4-speed transmission, positraction, and Rochester fuel-injection, plus an enlarged standard engine from 265cid to 283cid.

This new commitment to performance was the result of  Zora Arkus-Duntov, among other engineers, who saw the Corvette’s sporting potential even if the legacy engineers were not sure how to make an actual sports car. After seeing the Corvette Motorama concept in 1953, Duntov wrote a letter to Chevrolet asking for a job, which he received, and he joined the company as Assistant Staff Engineer. He is widely considered to be the father of the Corvette and he is largely responsible for the car’s transition into a genuine sporting contender.

Seeking an easier win than outright motorsport, Duntov outfitted a Corvette for land speed records, and by the 1956 12 Hours of Sebring, the team was ready to begin racing. They fielded three cars, two of which broke, and one of which finished 15th. One of the drivers observed “our performance was less than we had hoped but more than we deserved.”

Refinements continued for 1958 and 1959 and it was in this context that this particular car was built. Equipped with fuel injection and a 4-speed manual transmission, this car’s specification represents the top of the line regular production Corvette at the time. The car was restored in the late 1990s and has been in the care of the same owner for 26 years. A notebook from the early 2000s outlines regular use and maintenance during this period and the car has covered about 1,500 miles during his ownership. In addition to this notebook, the car comes with owner’s manual.
