Although we strongly associate BMW with sporting credentials today, this image was not as well established in the 1980s. Their cars, even the highest performing ones such as the M5 and M635, were always rather upright in appearance and architecture. At the time, they had not produced an overly sporting (or factory produced open topped) car since the 507 of the 1950s. The purpose of the Z1 was to transform that image. It did so not just aesthetically, but also technically, being chock full of innovations encompassing nearly every aspect of the car ranging from its structure and construction to its aerodynamics and suspension. 

The Z1 was the brainchild of Ulrich Bez, a Porsche veteran who was given free reign over not just a small team, but an entirely new company. That company was Technik GmbH, which despite being a wholly owned subsidiary of BMW, had operational autonomy. This favored the Z1’s free-thinking philosophy and allowed it to be developed on a timeline about half that of a conventional car. Styling was by Harm Lagaay, another Porsche veteran (who would go on to manage design there from 1989 to 2004).

The car was built around a galvanized steel chassis, coupled with a structural composite floor pan. Rather than opening conventionally, the doors slid down into the sills, adding a level of technical innovation and a more immersive experience when driving with the doors open. Bodywork was made of plastic and the transmission was rigidly connected to the differential via a torque tube for even greater strength. Motivation was provided by BMW’s venerable M20 inline-6, albeit the latest variant used in the E30 325i, which debuted a few months after the development of the Z1 began. The front suspension was also shared with the E30, although the front axle line was moved forward by about a foot in order to give the car a proper front-mid engined arrangement which yielded nearly perfect weight distribution (49/51 F/R). Rear suspension was entirely new, being BMW’s first multi-link design, which replaced the semi-trailing arm design of earlier BMWs and gave more stable handling. All of this was clothed in striking and aerodynamically efficient styling which generated zero lift at the front axle without the use of a chin spoiler.

Bez presented the car to BMW’s board as a concept, but it was so well liked that it was green lit for production and ultimately 8,000 examples were built, of which about 80% were sold in Germany. The cars were never offered in the United States and remain something of an esoteric curiosity. The car laid the groundwork for BMW’s subsequent sporting cars and played an instrumental role in reshaping the public’s perception of the company.

Like most Z1s, this example was sold new in Germany. It remained with the original owner until 2011, before passing it to a collector in Stuttgart who retained the car for 5 years when an American BMW executive purchased the car. That owner, Kurt Sposta, spent more than 35 years at BMW and played an integral role in the site selection process of Spartanburg, South Carolina for the company’s American factory, where the Z3 would ultimately be produced. This car resided in South Carolina for the duration of his ownership (after some motoring in Germany shortly after purchase, of course), which lasted until the current owner acquired the car in 2024. He has fastidiously maintained the car and added 7,000 kilometers since.

During his ownership, the car has received a new timing belt and water pump, Inspection II (transmission and differential oil, fuel filter, air filter, valve cover gasket, spark plugs), new tires, new shocks at all four corners, brake and clutch hydraulic fluid flushes, and numerous oil changes as well. The car is complete with recent service records, its original purchase invoice (showing a sale price of 77,000 deutschmarks), BMW Classic Certificate, two keys, tool kit, car cover, and first aid kit.
