1964 Chevrolet Corvette Coupe 327/300hp
Daytona Blue with Blue Interior
One of the most beautiful cars ever made and also one of the greatest sports cars of the 60s, the second generation or C2 Corvette “Sting Ray” is an American icon. Introduced for the 1963 model year, the cars were an instant hit. The excellent engines from 1962 were carried over, but the remainder of the car was new, with its now iconic styling and new suspension, which did away with Chevrolet’s ancient king pin system dating back to 1941 at the front, and independent for the first time at the rear. In 1963 and 1964, all cars were equipped with 327cid engines, ranging in output from 250hp to 375hp.
This particular 300hp 1964 Coupe was completed on the 18th of June 1964, finished in the color combination which it still wears today: Daytona Blue with Blue Vinyl interior. It was fitted with approximately $800 of options, bringing its original price to $5442.15. The options included tinted windshield, positraction, power brakes, transistor ignition, 300hp engine, 4-speed transmission, knock-off wheels, blackwall tires, back up lamps, and AM/FM radio.
The current owner of this car acquired it in Maryland in 2021. At that time, it was described as a 38,000 mile car, although no documentation exists to support this claim prior to 1998, when 32,207 miles were indicated.
Regardless of its mileage, this car is a very nice driver example with some stress cracks in the paint, as well as some swirls and evidence of blending visible on close inspection. The glass, lights and brightwork are in very good condition, as are the wheels. The interior is similarly nice, with correct carpet and upholstery in nice condition, together with the dashboard, switchgear, and instruments. The engine compartment is clean and well-detailed, again in keeping with a very nice driver level example.
The car runs and drives well. The engine starts easily, makes good power and carburates well. The gearbox shifts well, with the famously mechanical and slick gearchange for which these transmissions are known. The synchromesh and linkage work nicely, and the clutch take-up is positive. The brakes work symmetrically with good bite while the suspension is tight. The car tracks well and steers as it should, although the steering wheel is a few degrees off of center.
This is an excellent opportunity to acquire an early small-block corvette coupe that retains most of the delicate detailing that distinguishes early C2s. Finished in its lovely original color combination and sitting on desirable and original Kelsey Hayes turbine wheels with eared spinners, the car looks just right, in addition to running and driving well. This, combined with its attractive but not too perfect cosmetic presentation makes it the ideal example for the next owner to drive regularly for both short outings and long distance events.
